What is website accessibility testing?
Accessibility testing checks whether people can actually use a website when they browse differently from the way its designers did: with a screen reader, with a keyboard instead of a mouse, with a screen magnifier, with colour blindness, on a phone in bright sunlight, or with a temporary injury.
The checks in this tool are based on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), the standard most organisations and most accessibility laws refer to. You enter a page address, we load the page in a real browser, run automated checks against it, and turn the results into a report that explains each problem in plain language.
What automated testing can and cannot find
Automated checks are fast and consistent, and they catch the most common technical barriers. They are a starting point, not a verdict.
What this checker finds
- Images without a text alternative
- Form fields, buttons and links with no accessible name
- Text colours that do not contrast enough with their background
- Heading levels that skip or are empty
- Missing page landmarks such as a main region
- ARIA attributes that are misused or incomplete
- Scrolling regions and controls that keyboard users cannot reach
- Focus indicators removed with CSS
What needs a person
- Whether alt text actually describes the image well
- Whether the reading order and the visual order make sense together
- Whether every task can be completed using only a keyboard, from start to finish
- Whether content is written clearly enough for the audience
- Problems inside videos, PDFs and other documents
- Pages behind logins, cookie walls, menus or multi-step flows
Automated testing on its own cannot establish that a website is fully accessible. A manual review by someone who tests with assistive technology is the other half.
Why website accessibility matters
People
Accessibility barriers lock out visitors who are blind or have low vision, who cannot use a mouse, who have cognitive or motor impairments, and anyone whose situation makes the page harder to use that day. Many of them are customers.
Everyone else
The same fixes help people on small screens, slow connections, in noisy or bright environments, or who are simply in a hurry. Good structure, clear labels and readable contrast make a site easier for all of its visitors.
Risk
Accessibility is referenced by laws and standards in many countries, including the ADA and Section 508 in the United States, the European Accessibility Act, and WCAG-based public sector rules elsewhere. Which of those apply to a given organisation is a question for its legal counsel, not for a scanner.
Is this an ADA or WCAG compliance checker?
It is an accessibility checker. It runs automated checks derived from WCAG success criteria and reports what it observed on the page at the time. No automated tool can determine whether a website complies with the ADA, Section 508, the European Accessibility Act, WCAG as a whole, or any other law or standard, because much of what those require needs human judgement.
Use the report to find and fix real barriers. Treat any conclusion about legal obligations as a question for your counsel.
