What Cookiebot is

Cookiebot scans a site for cookies and trackers, shows a consent banner and stores the visitor's choices by category in the CookieConsent cookie.

Its script exposes a Cookiebot object that other code can query, and fires events such as CookiebotOnAccept and CookiebotOnDecline when a choice is made.

What marketers use it for

Site owners use it to collect consent choices and load marketing and statistics tags only for the categories a visitor accepted. It integrates with tag managers and Google consent mode.

How to recognize Cookiebot on a site

  1. Open the site in Chrome, open DevTools (F12, or Cmd+Option+I on a Mac) and go to the Network tab.
  2. Reload the page and type cookiebot into the filter box. The banner script loads from consent.cookiebot.com/uc.js, with the site's ID in the data-cbid attribute.
  3. In the Console tab, type Cookiebot.consent and press Enter. Shows the visitor's current choice for the necessary, preferences, statistics and marketing categories.
  4. In Application, then Cookies, look for CookieConsent. Some cookies only appear after a consent choice or a specific action.
