What Google Tag Manager is

Google Tag Manager (GTM) loads a container script on the page and fires the tags configured in the GTM web interface. It lets teams add and change tags from Google and other vendors without editing the site's code for each change.

A container is identified by an ID that starts with GTM-. The container itself sends no analytics data; the tags inside it do.

What marketers use it for

Marketers use it to deploy and manage analytics, conversion and remarketing tags from one place. Triggers and variables, often fed by the dataLayer, decide when each tag fires.

How to recognize Google Tag Manager on a site

  1. Open the site in Chrome, open DevTools (F12, or Cmd+Option+I on a Mac) and go to the Network tab.
  2. Reload the page and type gtm.js into the filter box. The container loads from googletagmanager.com/gtm.js with its ID (GTM-...) in the id parameter. A site can load more than one container.
  3. In the Console tab, type dataLayer and press Enter. Lists the events pushed to the data layer so far. Other tags use a dataLayer too, so confirm with the gtm.js request.
