Hotjar records sessions, builds heatmaps and runs on-site surveys and feedback widgets. It loads a site-specific script identified by a Hotjar site ID.

It keeps a site-specific user ID in the _hjSessionUser_<site-id> cookie and the current session in _hjSession_<site-id>.

What marketers use it for

Marketers and product teams use it to see how visitors scroll, click and move on key pages, and use surveys and feedback widgets to ask visitors directly.

How to recognize Hotjar on a site

  1. Open the site in Chrome, open DevTools (F12, or Cmd+Option+I on a Mac) and go to the Network tab.
  2. Reload the page and type hotjar into the filter box. The tracking script loads from static.hotjar.com with the site ID in its file name.
  3. In the Console tab, type typeof hj and press Enter. If it returns "function", the Hotjar tracking code is on the page.
  4. In Application, then Cookies, look for _hjSession_<site-id>, _hjSessionUser_<site-id>. Some cookies only appear after a consent choice or a specific action.
