What Klaviyo is

Klaviyo is an email and SMS marketing platform. Its onsite JavaScript, klaviyo.js, identifies visitors, records onsite events such as viewed products, and renders Klaviyo signup forms.

It exposes a klaviyo object for identify and track calls, and still supports the older _learnq queue.

What marketers use it for

Ecommerce marketers use it to trigger flows such as browse and cart abandonment and to attribute email and SMS revenue. The identify and track methods add site behavior to customer profiles.

How to recognize Klaviyo on a site

  1. Open the site in Chrome, open DevTools (F12, or Cmd+Option+I on a Mac) and go to the Network tab.
  2. Reload the page and type klaviyo into the filter box. The onsite script loads from static.klaviyo.com/onsite/js/klaviyo.js, with the account's public key in company_id.
  3. In the Console tab, type typeof klaviyo and press Enter. If it returns "object", Klaviyo's onsite JavaScript is on the page.
  4. In Application, then Cookies, look for __kla_id. Some cookies only appear after a consent choice or a specific action.
