What OneTrust Cookie Consent is

OneTrust's cookie consent product shows a cookie banner and preference center and stores the visitor's choices by category in the OptanonConsent cookie. Other tags and tag managers can read those choices to decide whether to run.

Its JavaScript API is exposed on a OneTrust object, and the OptanonWrapper function runs each time the banner loads or a choice changes.

What marketers use it for

Marketing and privacy teams use it to present consent choices and pass them to tag managers and ad platforms, for example through Google consent mode. The OnetrustActiveGroups value is commonly used to decide which tags fire.

How to recognize OneTrust Cookie Consent on a site

  1. Open the site in Chrome, open DevTools (F12, or Cmd+Option+I on a Mac) and go to the Network tab.
  2. Reload the page and type cookielaw.org into the filter box. The banner script and its configuration load from cdn.cookielaw.org.
  3. In the Console tab, type OnetrustActiveGroups and press Enter. Returns the IDs of the cookie categories that are currently turned on.
  4. In Application, then Cookies, look for OptanonAlertBoxClosed, OptanonConsent. Some cookies only appear after a consent choice or a specific action.
