What Pinterest Tag is

The Pinterest tag is code added to a website that reports visitor actions to Pinterest. It has base code that loads the tag library and event code for specific actions such as checkout or add to cart.

When Pinterest can't match a visitor to a Pinterest user, it sets the first-party _pin_unauth cookie to group that visitor's actions.

What marketers use it for

Advertisers use it to track and optimize conversions, measure campaign performance and build audiences on Pinterest.

How to recognize Pinterest Tag on a site

  1. Open the site in Chrome, open DevTools (F12, or Cmd+Option+I on a Mac) and go to the Network tab.
  2. Reload the page and type ct.pinterest.com into the filter box. Tag events go to ct.pinterest.com/v3/ with the tag ID in tid and the event name in event.
  3. In the Console tab, type typeof pintrk and press Enter. If it returns "function", the Pinterest base code is on the page.
  4. In Application, then Cookies, look for _pin_unauth, _pinterest_ct_ua. Some cookies only appear after a consent choice or a specific action.
